ATHENLAY GIVEN BOOST
6 October 2008
NUNHEAD'S ATHENLAY Junior football club has been hit with a wave
of sponsorship from a host of national companies thinking local - in a bid
to return the well-respected club to its former glory.
Pete Gibbons from Old Kent Road-based building contractors Saltash have
stumped up the cash for the U13s, while the Harris Federation have sponsored
the U11s.
David Brown, the project manager of morgan est - the Warwickshire-based
company working on the reservoir maintenance opposite with Thames Water -
has sponsored the U16 and Thames Water have forked out for their tracksuits.
Having once been among the best junior clubs in south London fending off the
scouts from local professional academies, Club Secretary Eddie Wilcox is
hoping the added financial backing and support from the businesses will be
the kick-start his boys need. He told the 'News': "We are delighted that the
fantastic people like Saltash, morgan est and the Harris Foundation are
getting involved. They have been brilliant.
"The club has been going since 1979 but very nearly closed in 2002 due to
financial problems.
"But a new board was formed and with the help of local businesses and the
support of the parents, we are going from strength to strength."
The club, which boasts sixteen sides including two girls’ teams, has
steadily grown over recent years, but is calling on more local businesses to
get involved. Wilcox added: "We are hoping that other like-minded businesses
and local companies will follow these lead and come and get involved with
our teams. We are hoping to get some decent changing facilities for the
girls - at the moment there is nothing for them here at all. Just the
run-down shed that the boys use."
If you would like to contact the club about sponsorship, please call the
